What is an Optometrist?

Optometrists are primary eye care providers who examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye. Optometrists are also trained to recognize ocular manifestations of systemic diseases and to refer patients to other health-care professionals when appropriate. Optometrists are skilled in performing comprehensive eye examinations and are licensed to prescribe medications and corrective lenses, including eyeglasses and contact lenses, to treat eye conditions. They also provide pre- and post-operative care for surgical procedures and manage low-vision conditions.
