Traditional Homeopathic Remedies
-
Lice in a person's hair cannot be smothered by a thick coating of petroleum jelly. A coating of mayonnaise may be somewhat more effective, as well as easier to remove. The National Pediculicide Association has stated that mayonnaise is probably as effective in combating lice as many chemical-based products. One of the most effective and completely non-toxic methods of eliminating lice consists of wetting the hair and combing the parasites out.Wet-combing is a two-person operation, as the individual with lice sits in a chair while a trusted friend or relative combs his hair and removes the parasites by hand (see references 1).
Tea Tree Oil
-
Oil from the leaves of the Australian melaleuca tree is a very popular lice removal remedy. The oils are steam-distilled from the leaves and are usually sold under the named of maleleuca oil or tea tree oil. Tea tree oil contains natural substances that fight fungus and bacteria, and laboratory tests have shown that a diluted tree oil solution of will kill lice. Research has still not proven that the substance is completely safe for human skin, and children appear to be especially susceptible to skin irritation via its use.
Other Remedies
-
Oils of many varieties have been used to combat lice infestations (see References 1). Olive oil is commonly applied to the hair or skin, but any type of natural oil known to be non-toxic may be helpful.
