How to Use Iridology

Iridology is a form of alternative diagnosis in which the iris of the eye is examined for markings or discolorations that might correspond to certain health problems or irregularities in the body. It was invented by Ignatz von Peczely in the 19th century, when he saw a dark streak in the iris of someone he was treating for a broken leg. The dark streak reminded him of a similar streak he saw in the iris of an owl whose leg was broken years before, which disappeared as the bird's leg healed. Peczely went on document other correspondences between eye marks and illnesses in his patients. Iridologists use eye maps, or charts, to examine your eye for any marks that may signal a problem elsewhere in your body.

  Schedule an appointment with an iridology practitioner. Make sure the practitioner is certified by the International Iridology Practitioners Association (IIPA). You can do this by visiting the IIPA website.

  Fill out your full medical history for the practitioner. This will help her better understand your iris and improve her ability to read it.

  Ask questions about your practitioner's evaluation. Your practitioner will take a picture of your eye with a camera and expand it to examine your iris according to the eye chart. If you are skeptical about the legitimacy of the procedure, don't be afraid to continue asking questions until you feel reassured. Ask to see the chart used in analyzing the iris.

  Schedule an appointment with a doctor or physician to confirm any medical problem discovered.
