How to Access Consciousness When a Resistance Persists

Resistance to a change in consciousness can render access to these states and their associated emotional and cognitive benefits almost impossible. The mind is said to resist and deny that which it fears and does not understand. Many people find themselves accessing various levels of consciousness during seemingly mundane and relatively common activities, like when they are sleep-deprived or experiencing a high fever. However, intentionally accessing altered states is difficult for many people. You may fear experiencing the perceived abnormal physical sensations that are associated with an altered state or you may fear that you will lose your connection with ordinary reality.

Recall dreams by journaling. Try to be aware or lucid in your dream landscape to fully explore this state. Write about your dreams as soon as possible after awakening. Journaling can provide you with detailed documentation which you can study further if necessary.

    • 2

Relate your dreams to others. Find someone who will sit down and listen to your dream sequences, perhaps in exchange for your listening to his. This can help you recall and assimilate forgotten story lines and messages from your subconscious.

    • 3

Maintain a meditation regimen. The fear and resistance to altered states of consciousness can be whittled down slowly by meditating consistently. As the mind and physical body become accustomed to relaxation in the midst of lack of external stimuli, they tend to become receptive and accepting to changes in the internal landscape.

Listen to audio imbued with brainwave entrainment technology. Listen to the tracks with stereo headphones; this can be done in conjunction with your meditation practice. The "everyday" brain usually emits brain waves in the beta range. Audio that uses superimposed positioning of beats and tones can "train" the mind to resonate with higher and more relaxed states of consciousness, such as those experienced in the alpha and delta range.

Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. The implementation of these everyday practices has been shown to be important when working through emotional issues and, in turn, is important when working on accessing different states of consciousness when an emotional blockage exists.
