How to Develop Free Will And Intention

Free will and intention are complicated ideas attributed to biological and emotional processes. The Institute for Emerging Ethics and Technologies says that "data shows that when we feel like we're making a free spontaneous decision, very often there's an unconscious brain process that has already made the decision beforehand." When attempting to harness free will to improve your life by acting with intention, spend time meditating on the major and minor decisions you have made in your life thus far and the results those decisions generated.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the areas of your life that you feel lack intentionality. This might be your work life, your home life, your relationships, your friendships or extracurricular activities. Use this list for your second list.

    • 2

Write down specific decisions that must be made from each area of your life in the first list. For example, when contemplating your work life, think about whether your current job is a fit for your personality, makes enough money to support your lifestyle or puts you in a work environment where you are treated as an equal. Your specific decisions is, then, to stay in your current job or look for other employment opportunities.

    • 3

Write down each possible choice that can be made for each area of your life. Free will and intention is defined as having all of the possibilities laid out in front of you and feeling the freedom to choose between them.

    • 4

Weigh the pros and cons of each choice. You can do this by writing down your thoughts and meditating on the possibilities. Do not rush the examination process; take a few days to think about it.

    • 5

Take time to examine your gut instinct about each choice. If one choice makes you feel excited, settled or happy, that choice is one you are likely to pursue with success.
