What is Guaifenex PSE?

Guaifenex PSE is a combination drug available over the counter, which is used to treat nose and chest congestion caused by colds, allergies and sinus infections. This drug contains Guaifenisen which is an expectorant. It works by loosening phlegm and congestion and making it easier to cough out. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that helps decrease nasal congestion by decreasing swelling in the nasal passages. Guaifenex PSE is available both in its generic form and by several different brand names.

    • Guiafenex PSE is available in tablet, capsule, chewable tablet and oral liquid forms. It is available in several different strengths.

    Side Effects

    • Some side effects that may occur when taking this drug are nausea, insomnia, light-headedness or dizziness, headache, nervousness, unusual sweating or loss of appetite.

    Precautions

    • You should not take this medication of you are allergic to guaifenesin or pseudoephedrine. Caution should be taken when taking this medication if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid problems, closed angle glaucoma or if you find yourself having difficulty urinating.

    Interactions

    • Individuals should not use this medication if they are currently taking any form of MAO inhibitors. This medication may also worsen the side effects of some medications for migraines.

    Pregnancy and Guaifenex PSE

    • If an individual is pregnant, use this medication only on the advice of your physician. Pseudoephedrine is excreted in breast milk; it is not known if guaifenesin is excreted in breast milk or not. Therefore, be sure to contact a physician before using this product or any similar product that contains these ingredients.
