Polarity Massage Techniques

Polarity massage therapy balances energy flow. Created by Dr. Randolph Stone, polarity massage techniques incorporate Chinese energy medicine, Ayurvedic medicine and natuapathy to balance energy within, without and through the body, alleviating pain and illness. Polarity massage techniques restore health after accidents or surgeries.
  1. Polarity

    • According to polarity massage therapy, the positive node lies in the head and right side, and the negative node lies in the toes and along the left side; the power source is the spiraling energy of the chakras. Based upon an analysis of painful or stressed body parts, a polarity massage therapist will place hands or fingers contemporaneously on positive and negative areas, releasing blocked energy, but does not touch the painful body part directly.

    Massage Techniques

    • For lower back pain, a polarity therapist does not massage the lower back. Instead, the therapist applies pressure to the psoas muscles in the lower pelvis near the hip joint and upper back muscles on each side of the body simultaneously. For sciatica, the therapist releases the psoas muscles in conjunction with the buttocks muscles but does not address the sciatic nerve. For knee pain, the therapist applies pressure to the quadriceps and the calf muscles but leaves the knee alone. In all cases, the therapist massages opposing muscle points but leaves the direct location of the pain untouched.

    Polarity Therapy Touch

    • A polarity therapist uses three types of touch, according to the level of blockage. The therapist uses satvic touch for balance superficial blockages, addressed at the first sign of pain. Rajasic touch is moderately stimulating to release subtle blockages that are becoming chronic. Tamasic touch applies deeper pressure to disperse resistant tension for unconsciously stored stress. An experienced polarity therapist identifies recurring patterns of stored stress and uses tamasic touch to release blocked energy.

    Polarity Yoga, Nutrition and Counseling

    • Polarity massage techniques include special yoga stretches, diet and counseling to release blocked energy. Dr. Stone wrote a book, "Easy Stretching for Vitality and Beauty," describing stretches that mimic massage touch. As for nutrition, a polarity diet will balance opposing energetic elements. According to polarity therapy, high protein foods increase warmth and power, whereas fruits oxidize the blood and soothe the nervous system. Perhaps most important for resistant pain is counseling to balance negative thoughts and feelings with tolerance, non-judgment and forgiveness. The four aspects, massage, yoga, nutrition and counseling encourage embracing the wholeness of life through positive thoughts and actions.
