Natural Cures Using Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (or H2O2 as its known chemically) is a common household fixture that is commonly used to sanitize superfluous cuts and scrapes. However, hydrogen peroxide has other health-related uses, such as easing the effects of the flu as well as relieving minor oral pain. This can help you stay healthy without spending too much money on expensive remedies or doctor visits.
  1. Oral Antiseptic

    • Although you may be tempted to reach for the mouthwash when the first signs of gingivitis or sore gums appear, hydrogen peroxide is a much cheaper alternative that works just as well. Simply make a half-and-half mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water, then gargle, rinse and spit. Hydrogen peroxide can clear up mild-to-moderate cases of gingivitis and gum infections in only a few days.

    Easing the Flu

    • If you start experiencing flu-like symptoms (sore throat, cough or fever), you can help ease the effects and longevity of the flu by pouring a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (less than one teaspoon) into your ear. Once the peroxide has been applied, wait for it to fizzle (it also may sting a bit), then flush out with water. Be careful not to get the hydrogen peroxide in your eyes. Because many flu viruses take up residence in the outer or middle ear--as it's a nice, warm open space where they can enter and exit freely--doing this within the first 48 hours of flu symptoms can help shorten the duration of your sickness.

    Warning

    • The Internet is awash in much unproven information about the use of food-grade hydrogen peroxide for the treatment of serious diseases such as emphysema and cancer. It is very important not to try and ingest food-grade hydrogen peroxide unless you have been specifically told by a physician because food-grade hydrogen peroxide can be very toxic and can harm more than help.
