Natural Way to Reduce Candida
Candida albicans is a member of the yeast genus, and lives mainly in the human mouth, digestive tract and genital region. At normal levels candida is harmless, but an overgrowth (called candidiasis) can cause thrush and genital infections. Systemic candidiasis, which is a deep infection throughout the body, can be fatal if not treated by a medical professional. However, for lower-grade yeast infections, there are natural, effective ways to to reduce candida to a harmless level, thereby eradicating candidiasis.-
Causes
-
Candida albicans levels are usually controlled by the body's coexisting beneficial bacteria. Overuse of antibiotics, which destroy beneficial bacteria, encourage an overgrowth of candida. A weakened immune system, diabetes, or too much sugar in the diet can also lead to an overgrowth.
Herbal Treatments
-
According to Earl Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D., mixing 25 to 40 drops of Pau d'arco extract in liquid and consuming up to three times daily, can cure fungal infections. Dr. Mindell also suggests a douche containing goldenseal to relieve candidiasis. Use tea tree oil, an essential oil, topically to clear up fungal infections of the skin, such as athlete's foot, and to cure yeast vaginitis (vulvovaginal candidiasis).
Supplements and Diet
-
Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C., recommends taking acidophilus, caprylic acid, essential fatty acids containing black currant seed and flaxseed oil, quercetin, and a vitamin B complex to fight candida infection. She also suggests eating only gluten-free grains, such as brown rice and millet, and restricting sugar intake because candida "thrives in a sugary environment" which is caused by a diet high in carbohydrates and yeast products. Ms. Balch recommends eliminating citrus fruits, aged cheeses, alcohol, chocolate, dried fruits and fermented foods, such as soy sauce and vinegar.
Prevention
-
Of course prevention is the best medicine. Dr. Mindell and Ms. Balch agree that a diet that includes a daily serving of unsweetened yogurt with live, active cultures, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, and plenty of garlic, which has antimicrobial properties, will maintain the proper balance of bacteria and yeast in the body, and prevent an overgrowth. Because a suppressed immune system can cause candidiasis, Dr. Mindell also advocates building the immune system by regularly consuming foods like garlic and shiitake mushrooms.
