Home Remedies for Peyronie's Disease
Peyronie's disease (PD), a condition that causes a curvature of the penis, is one that men do not like to talk about. There is no cure, though there are some surgical and medicinal procedures available. The unproven, more natural methods for treating Peryonie's disease are controversial but worth looking at for potential alternative treatments. None of the following treatments have been evaluated by the FDA.-
Vitamins and Hands-On Help
-
Vitamin E has various properties that may allow it to help Peyronie's. It has been linked to antifibrotic (antiscar), anti-inflammatory and antimitotic properties. It has also been linked to helping breast lumps, skin and eye scars, keloids and removal of plaque from the arteries. Vitamin C has often been used in tandem with vitamin E in some of the studies conducted as they have similar properties and may help each other to function better. It has been suggested that increasing lymphatic fluid circulation and blood flow to the pelvis may help to reduce the scarring from PD. Exercises that work the pubococcygeus (PC) muscles like tensing and releasing your penis may help to strengthen and increase blood flow to the problem area, as can stretching exercises (see Resources for an introductory video). Massage can accomplish a similar result; videos demonstrating proper technique are available for purchase on the Internet.
Minerals, Enzymes and Herbs
-
Methylsulfonyl methane (MSM) is a supplement taken for joint and tissue function for years; it may also improve PD. Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is an amino acid that may have similar anti-fibrotic properties as vitamin E because it also increases body tissue oxygen uptake. Acetyl-L-carnitine has been used as a natural treatment for hardening of the arteries and it may have a similar effect on the plaque in PD. Quercetin, a nutrient found in apples, may help to form the building blocks of healthy tissue; it may be helpful for tissue repair in conjunction with other natural methods or after PD surgery. Two Japanese formulas--keishi-bukuryo-gan (KBG) and hachimi-jio-gan (HJG)--are suggested in Eastern medicine for poor circulation, fibroid repair and bone healing and may help improve the flow of blood to the penis.
More Treatment and Stress
-
Acupuncture may also be of some help to increase blood flow and improve the efficacy of some other treatments. Eastern movement treatments like Tai Chi and Qi Gong can increase the energy going into the lower pelvic region. Qi Gong especially deals with the theoretical clearing of energy blocks in the body, and if the practice works, it may clear up the physical block of plaque in the penis. Stress may be a cause of your PD; if so, there are many potential causes and cures, and it would help you to try to reduce the amount of stress in your life. The Peryonie's Disease Institute (see References) recommends the Emotional Freedom Technique, which may help to relieve some of the anxiety and fear about PD in the first place. The PDI has instructors in the technique who may be able to help with emotional difficulties.
