Natural Arthritis Remedies

Arthritis is not one illness. The term encompasses 100 different types of disease. Nearly one in five adults has a form of arthritis. While arthritic diseases vary in severity and symptoms, they all have one thing in common: pain. The pain is usually in the joints, connective tissue or muscles. Many who suffer from arthritis are looking at natural remedies as either a substitute for or supplement to prescription drug care.
  1. Diet & Nutrition

    • The diet can play a big role in how the body functions. Fish, especially that which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce inflammation. Fiber, strawberries and olive oil can also be effective as anti-inflammatories. On the other hand, foods cooked in high temperatures (fried foods, grilled meat) may increase inflammation. Eating a balanced, low-fat diet is the key.

The other way diet and nutrition become a natural arthritis remedy is in weight control. Excess weight can put pressure on the joints, ligaments and muscles that are affected by arthritis. Losing weight when necessary and keeping weight in a normal range can have a significant effect on arthritis.

    Supplements

    • Among the supplements that have shown promise as natural remedies for arthritis is glucosamine. This component of joint cartilage, especially when combined with chondroitin--found in connective tissue--can ease arthritis pain. Glucosamine may slow the progression of deterioration in osteoarthritis.

Other supplements that have shown promise as natural arthritis remedies include cat's claw, fish oil, GLA, Sam-e, MSM and turmeric. Any supplements, however, could interfere with prescription medications and should be taken with a physician's knowledge.

    Alternative Therapies

    • Meditation, yoga and aromatherapy can relax the mind and body, allowing for healing and relief from pain. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that involves using needles to balance the "qi," the flow of energy through the body. It has shown promise in treating some forms of arthritis. Magnets have been used to treat arthritis. Hypnosis has worked for some.
