Natural Way of Getting Rid of Flaky Scalp

A flaky scalp, also known as dandruff, is a common condition that usually leads to a scratch-and-itch cycle. Causes of a flaky scalp include dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, not shampooing often enough, psoriasis, eczema, contact dermatitis (sensitivity to hair products) and Malassezia (yeast-like fungus). There is more than one natural way of getting rid of a flaky scalp.
  1. Shampoo

    • Shampooing often makes it easier to control a flaky scalp. Shampoo daily, if necessary. Start with a mild, non-medicated shampoo. Since a flaky scalp is often caused by oily skin, washing daily with a mild shampoo, diluted with an equal amount of water, is often enough control. If that does not work, move on to a dandruff shampoo. Once the flaking is under control, use the shampoo two or three times a week.

Lather twice with dandruff shampoo. Work up the first lather as soon as you get in the shower, so the shampoo has time to work. Leave it on at least five-to-ten minutes. When you are almost finished in the shower, rinse your hair thoroughly and do a second lather and rinse. The second rinse will leave a little medication on your scalp. You can also lather up with shampoo and place a shower cap on your wet hair. Leave it on for an hour or so and rinse. Leaving the shower cap on will help improve the effectiveness of the shampoo.

Medicated dandruff shampoos can be harsh and drying on hair. Apply conditioner every time you shampoo to counteract the effects. Don't rub the conditioner into your scalp.

    Lifestyle

    • Stress can trigger or worsen skin conditions. Learning to manage stress can help. Learn relaxation techniques like meditation and use them on a daily basis. Eat a healthful diet that provides enough zinc and B vitamins. Certain types of fats may help prevent dandruff as well.

Getting sunlight can also be good for dandruff. Spend a little time outdoors, limiting sun exposure to 30 minutes or less. Direct ultraviolet light has anti-inflammatory effects on scaly skin. This is the reason the scalp is often less flaky during the summer. Be sure to wear sunscreen.

    Thyme

    • Thyme is a common kitchen herb that has mild antiseptic properties, helping to relieve flaky scalp. Boil four heaping teaspoons of dried thyme in two cups of water for ten minutes. Strain the brew and allow it to cool. Pour half the mixture over your clean and damp hair, allowing the liquid to cover the scalp. Massage the mixture in gently, and do not rinse. Save the last half for another day.
