Alternatives to Antiperspirants

The connection between antiperspirant use and breast cancer is a widely debated topic within the medical community. Antiperspirants are made with aluminum-based compounds that may be absorbed by the skin and cause estrogen-related effects that contribute to the development of breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute indicates that research studies as of 2010 do not have conclusive evidence that antiperspirant causes breast cancer. However, just to be on the safe side, some people are switching to alternative products.
  1. Antiperspirant-Free Deodorants

    • Antiperspirants work by plugging the sweat glands under the arm with aluminum-based compounds to stop sweat from flowing to the surface of the skin. They contain ingredients such as potassium aluminum sulfate and aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly that may be potential carcinogens. Antiperspirants also include petrochemical derivatives called parabens that disrupt hormones by acting like estrogen, the hormone that is responsible for growing cancer cells. Deodorants, on the other hand, allow sweat to flow naturally and safely to the surface. They work by neutralizing odor-causing bacteria. The Green Living Ideas website indicates that many available deodorants contain natural materials such as aloe vera gel, lichens and essential oils that are safe for human use.

    Crystal Deodorant Stones

    • According to the Antiperspirant Without Aluminum website, one common alternative to antiperspirant is the crystal deodorant stone. These stones work by blocking odor-causing bacteria. The stones or skin must be wet before they are used, but they last a long time. This deodorant is also available in liquid form for people who are uncomfortable with using stones. Both varieties are made with potassium sulphate and mineral salts.

    Homemade Herbal Deodorants

    • Deodorants containing simple organic ingredients can be easily made at home and stored in the refrigerator for later use. For example, the Natural Beauty website suggests mixing 2 tsp. of zinc oxide powder with 2/3 cup of witch hazel extract, 2 tbsp. of aloe vera juice and 30 to 40 drops of an essential oil such as sage, lavender or rose geranium. Mix thoroughly and pour in a dark-glass spray bottle for easy use. The website also provides options for people who sweat heavily or who have sensitive skin.

    Aluminum-Free Antiperspirant

    • In June 2010 a company named Klima released an aluminum-free antiperspirant that blocks both sweat and odor. It contains pentapeptides, tiny molecules that are able to penetrate the pores and stop the release of sweat. According to i-Newswire, the product also contains essential oils such as tea tree and lemon that block bacteria from creating unpleasant odors, as well as allantoin, a substance that acts as an anti-irritant and gives the skin a healthy appearance. Finally, lavender essential oils cool and refresh the skin.
