Can You Consume Green Clay?
-
The Claim
-
Geophagy, or dirt eating, is the practice of eating dirt, clay or earthy substances to obtain specific health benefits. The purported benefits range from the relieving of menstrual cramps and the cleansing the colon and liver to stimulating proper digestive and immune system function and healing of food allergies.
The Method
-
Green clay (or bentonite), especially, is said to bring about beneficial results in treating most stomach disorders. One tsp. of green clay powder mixed with eight to 10 oz. of water should be left to stand overnight. The next morning, stir the mixture with a wooden spoon and drink it. Repeat this each morning for 21 days, and wait a week before beginning the treatment again.
The Body's Adjustment
-
There are sometimes mild and brief side effects when beginning a green clay regimen. Since constipation is likely to occur as the clay begins to work in the system, your body must remain hydrated. Doctors suggest that all adults drink eight to 10 glasses of water every day.
The Results
-
If you believe you are suffering from symptoms related to toxicity, a regimen of green clay, optimally, may clean you out and restore your body to its proper level of functioning. The results will vary, however, depending on your diet. It should be one that stimulates both elimination and liver function.
Contraindications
-
Bentonite and other healing clays should only be used under strict medical supervision if you are on medication. It should not be used by people with high blood pressure, and only by people with an iron intolerance if blood samples are being monitored.
