Why is a neuron called an interneuron?

Neurons are not typically referred to as "interneurons" unless they are specifically being discussed within the context of the central nervous system, notably in the brain and spinal cord.

Interneurons are neurons located within the central nervous system that have connecting synapses with other neurons but are not directly responsible for transmitting signals from the sensory organs or effectors. Essentially, they serve as intermediaries in the processing of information within the central nervous system.
