What is hypoparathyroidism?
Hypoparathyroidism is a condition in which the parathyroid glands produce too little parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH is responsible for regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the body. When PTH levels are too low, calcium levels can decrease and phosphate levels can increase.
Symptoms of hypoparathyroidism can include:
* Tingling or numbness in the hands, feet, or face
* Muscle cramps or spasms
* Fatigue
* Weakness
* Depression
* Anxiety
* Difficulty concentrating
* Memory loss
* Hair loss
* Dry skin
* Brittle nails
* Tooth decay
* Bone pain or fractures
Hypoparathyroidism is often treated with calcium and vitamin D supplements. In some cases, medication may be necessary to increase PTH levels.
Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition, but it can be serious if left untreated. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, talk to your doctor right away.
