What is osteocentesis?

Osteocentesis is a procedure that punctures the outer layer of bone to access the trabecular bone or bone marrow inside. It is performed with the use of a specialized needle called an osteotome. The needle typically uses a rotating cutting motion to create an opening in the denser layers of peripheral bone. Osteocentesis is primarily performed for diagnostic purposes, such as obtaining a bone biopsy or retrieving fluid from the bone marrow for analysis and pathological examination. It helps in evaluating various conditions, including bone tumors, infections, metabolic diseases, and certain blood or bone marrow disorders.
