What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Humans Using Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth is a compound that is found in nature and comprised of the skeletal remains of plants. Specifically, diatomeceous earth is the crushed and purified remains of the diatom plants, hence the name. It is used for many natural health applications, including removing intestinal parasites and toxins from the body.
  1. Better Digestion

    • Humans who use diatomaceous earth may find that their digestion is easier and any parasites that were living in the intestinal tract are gone. This is because the diatomaceous earth dries out any parasites, effectively killing them and allowing them to pass through the body. Because it is also a colon cleanser, it aids in the proper absorption of vitamins and minerals in the food and supplements human intake. This can lead to better overall health as well as better digestive health.

    Dry Skin

    • Drinking a beverage that contains diatomaceous earth will not cause drying of the skin. Touching the diatomaceous earth can dry out the parts of the skin that directly came into contact with the undiluted DE. For this reason, it is advisable never to touch DE directly, and to use gloves when handling it to prevent dry patches of skin. If you do come into direct contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. You can also use a moisturizer or lotion if you like after washing and drying that area.

    Cough

    • Diatomaceous earth is usually mixed with water, milk or juice and then taken orally by drinking. Occasionally when mixing the DE with the liquid, you may accidentally inhale some of it. Though a little bit won't cause a lot of harm, it can cause a tickle in the throat or a cough. Be careful not to inhale any dust when handling dry diatomaceous earth. If you do inhale some and develop a cough as a result, seek medical attention.

    Red or Painful Eyes

    • Like accidentally inhaling diatomaceous earth dust, handling DE means that some of that dust or particles can settle into the eyes. Since the eyes are extraordinarily sensitive, they will get red or irritated very easily. To combat this, be careful when mixing DE and wear protective eyewear. Rinse the eyes with water continuously for several minutes if irritation occurs. If you are wearing contact lenses, remove them gently. Always consult a doctor if redness or irritation continues.
