Tips on Heated Rock Massages
Heated rock massage techniques are estimated to be around 5,000 years old and belonged to cultures such as ancient Indian and even the Mayan civilization. The theory behind the massage is that the hot rocks relax the muscles and draw out any muscle pain or discomfort. The rocks are also assumed to connect energy pathways that rebalance the body.-
Heat the Stones
-
Heat the stones in a pot of hot water. The water should be about 150 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature of the rocks will drop to around 120 degrees Fahrenheit when removed from the water. Use a mercury thermometer to measure the heat of the water.
Removing the Stones
-
Remove the stones with a slotted ladle so the excess water runs off the stones. Dry the stones using a towel. Make sure the stones are completely dry before applying them to the body. However, don't take too long drying them, as the rocks still need to be sufficiently hot.
Testing the Heat
-
Before placing the rocks on the body, test the heat of the rocks with your hands. If they seem to be a comfortable temperature, place them on your own arms before applying them to the client' back or legs. The reason for this is that your hands may be less sensitive to heat than other areas of your body such as arms and legs.
Large and Small Rocks
-
Place the large stones on large body parts such as the hips and shoulders. Smaller stones should be placed along the spine, legs or even in between toes. Large stones will retain heat longer than small stones, so placing them on large muscle groups such as the shoulders will ensure more relaxation for the large muscle groups.
Finishing the Massage
-
Remove the stones and finish the massage. Begin by removing the larger stones first, and then make your way from the upper back down to the lower back or legs. Apply massage oil to the body parts that had rocks placed on them, and massage those areas.
Treating Conditions with Hot Stone Massage
-
Hot stone massages are used to treat a variety of conditions. Some of the most common reasons for getting them are back pain and aches, osteoporosis, stress, circulation problems, insomnia and depression. Consult a doctor before performing a hot rock massage on someone with a skin condition, pregnant women or someone who has recently had surgery or chemotherapy.
