How to Use Blue Green Algae

Blue green algae, also known as spirulina, is a form of algae. The aroma and taste of spirulina is similar to seaweed. It is found in many fresh water locations such as ponds, lakes and rivers. According the University of Maryland Medical Center (2011), spirulina is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and contains nutrients including B comlex, beta-carotene, vitamin E, manganese, zinc, copper, iron, selenium and gamma linolenic acid. Due to its supply of nutrients and antioxidants, blue green algae is used for various health-related issues, ranging from diet supplements and anti-aging to external skin treatments.

Instructions

    • 1

Take spirulina capsules, tablets or liquid extract with tepid water. According to University of Maryland Medical Center (2011), a standard dose is four to six 500mg tablets per day. Avoid alcohol, soft drinks or coffee for at least 30 minutes after taking the capsules since these drinks may destroy nutrients and enzymes in the blue green algae. Capsules offer more convenience with less taste to the product than powder.

Mix spirulina powder with fruit juice or in a smoothie to conceal the slight marine taste and smell. Spirulina is dried into powder through a dehydration process or freeze-drying. The powder is also used as a slightly salty seasoning in soups, dressings, dips, sauces, casseroles or sprinkled on food. Make a morning smoothie to jump-start your day. Blend 1/2-tbsp spirulina in 1 cup of orange, pineapple or apple juice. Add one banana and 1/4-tsp vanilla extract. Mix well in a blender. Add more fresh fruit and less juice for a thicker smoothie.

Mix the ingredients together and apply to clean, dry skin. Let the mixture sit on the skin for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then cool water. Follow the facial with a toner and moisturizing lotion.
