Natural Cures for Gas Pains

Intestinal gas pain makes people dread mealtimes. Instead of focusing on nourishing the body, they know intense pain is around the corner. There are over-the-counter and prescription medications available, but natural remedies are often just as effective, less stressful on the body, and don't require the time and expense of a doctor's visit. If relief is not achieved with natural cures, see a physician for a full diagnosis of the problem.
  1. Peppermint

    • Peppermint is one of the best natural cures for gas pains. It contains menthol, which is an antispasmodic, or relaxing agent, which helps prevent the intestinal cramping or blockage that creates gas. A few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water is a simple solution that is taken before or after a meal, or at the onset of pain.

    Tea

    • A variety of teas assist in relieving intestinal gas pains. Ginger tea is considered an excellent remedy. Chamomile, anise and peppermint tea also work. Drink the tea after meals or when pain occurs. Avoid drinking tea for gas pain relief during a meal, however, as the liquid sometimes dilutes the beneficial acids in the stomach. This has the potential to disrupt proper digestion.

    Stretching

    • Stretching or exercise sometimes help with gas pain. Taking a walk allows the abdomen to stretch out, bringing relief. If experiencing debilitating cramps, stretch the intestines by lying on the back, raising the knees to the chest and taking deep breaths.

    Massage

    • Massage is another simple way to fix gas pains. Lie on the back and take a few deep breaths to relax. Rub the upper intestine slowly and gently. Work toward the stomach using a circular motion. Increase the pressure as needed, but don't press so hard that it increases pain. Be patient with this method, stay relaxed and continue to breathe deeply.
