Natural Way to Remove Nits

Nits are the eggs of an adult head lice. They are small in size, white with a hard outer shell. Removing the nit is more difficult than killing the actual head lice as the nits are attached to the hair with a "glue" the adult lice produces. The key to removing the nits is to break down the glue. While there are several different medicines that remove nits, it can also be done with natural products.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply mayonnaise from a room temperature, unopened jar, directly to the lice infested scalp and hair. Rub the mayonnaise into the roots, paying special attention to the hairline and behind the ears.

    • 2

Place a shower cap over the hair and leave for two hours. Keep a towel close by, as the mayonnaise, when it warms due to body heat, will begin to break down. This may cause the oil in the mayonnaise to leak out the shower cap.

    • 3

Wash the mayonnaise away with regular hair shampoo. Do not put conditioner in the hair at this time.

    • 4

Scrub full-strength vinegar into the hair, then rinse with hot water. Most of the nits will wash away when the vinegar is rinsed from the hair.

    • 5

Comb through the hair with a fine tooth comb. Because of the oil in the mayonnaise, the comb will easily glide through the hair.

    • 6

Locate any remaining nits and pull them from the hair. They should easily slip off the hair. Repeat until the hair is nit free.

    • 7

Throw away any items (shower cap, towels) that came into contact with the infected scalp. One left over nit can lead to an infestation in a matter of weeks.
