Instructions

1
Peel the ginger root with a paring knife. Remove the skin carefully to ensure that you do not waste too much of the root by cutting away large portions of ginger.
-
2
Rub your peeled ginger root over a grater. Use a grater with small holes.
-
3
Pour 1/4 cup of water into a bowl, and add the grated ginger.
-
4
Place a strainer inside of a bowl.
-
5
Line the strainer with a cheesecloth.
-
6
Pour the contents of the bowl containing the ginger and water into the strainer.
-
7
Pick up the cheesecloth containing the ginger and water.
-
8
Pull the edges of the cheesecloth together to form a ball shape.
-
9
Hold the cheesecloth closed with one hand and use the other hand to squeeze the cheesecloth over the bowl. Squeeze the cheesecloth tightly to ensure all of the water is escaping the cloth.
-
10
Allow the water to drain into the bowl.
-
11
Pour the water from the bowl into a container with a tight-fitting lid. You may dispose of the grated ginger or save it to use when making recipes such as miso soup or ginger tea.
-
12
Store the ginger extract in the refrigerator.
