How to Ground a Client After a Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massages originated in ancient Chinese medicinal practices and are now a common form of alternative therapy in North America. During a hot stone massage, you will apply about 50 hot basalt stones to your client's body, applying pressure to her muscles with your hands. The client sometimes finds this type of massage less invasive than the traditional hand massage. According to Shirley Vanderbilt of "Massage and Bodywork," the patient often reports the experience has a grounding effect that makes her feel relaxed, calm and connected to her body.

Instructions

    • 1

Alert your patient to the impending end of your appointment. Inform him when about five minutes remain. Use a soft and calm tone of voice to soothe the patient and prevent causing any alarm at the end of your session.

    • 2

Cover the patient with warm blankets. This eases the physical shock of stone removal and helps the patient to remain relaxed even as her session ends. Quietly ask if she is warm enough, and provide more blankets if requested.

    • 3

Instruct the patient to remain on his stomach. Ask him to inhale deeply and exhale slowly 10 times.

    • 4

Ask the patient to tell you how she feels. This helps her to retain her sense of grounding even as she interacts with you. Ask what she liked best about the procedure and how it made her feel.

    • 5

Listen quietly. Take care not to direct the patient's thoughts, but allow him to discern for himself how he feels. Help him to crystallize what feels good at the end of this massage.

    • 6

Advise the patient to practice deep breathing techniques to maintain relaxation throughout the day. Tell her to drink plenty of water to remain hydrated and guard against the diuretic effects of massage. Recommend plenty of rest.

    • 7

Offer a glass of water or other beverage if desired. Return the patient's clothes. Leave the massage room dimly lit and warm when you leave the patient to dress.
