How to Mix a Saline Solution

Saline solution is used for a number of health purposes, including nasal and oral irrigation. Saline is a simple saltwater solution that is similar to your body's own natural fluids (i.e., tears). This composition makes it ideal for cleansing moist areas in the body. You can make your own saline solution using a handful of household ingredients.

Pour the salt and baking soda into the water and mix to dissolve completely. According to the University of Michigan Health System, adding baking soda to your saline solution helps the fluid to adapt to the pH of your body. It also helps to break down mucous.
