How to Use Local Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is one of the oldest known health aids, dating back to the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. There is even mention of its healing properties in the texts of the Greek physician Hippocrates from 2,500 years ago. Today, many people use bee pollen to control allergies, strengthen their immune system, improve strength and vitality and as a general health booster. Using local bee pollen guarantees that the bee pollen will be fresher, as well as helping support local beekeepers.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a local beekeeper and inquire if they collect pollen and where they sell their products. Many beekeepers sell their products directly from their farms, or source them to local stores. If you can't find a local beekeeper, contact your nearest health food store and ask about their local pollen products.

Read the ingredient list on the package of bee pollen. You can take bee pollen in tablet, capsule or granule form, but it's important to check that the bee pollen you'll be using doesn't contain additives.

    • 3

Measure out the appropriate amount of bee pollen for your needs. Bee pollen should be slowly introduced into your diet, starting with a few granules a day and working your way up to 1 to 2 tsp. per day. If you suffer from allergies, start introducing bee pollen into your diet two to three months before your allergies generally start up.

    • 4

Pay close attention to your body's reactions to the introduction of bee pollen. If you have an adverse reaction, such as itchy eyes, runny nose, headache or sweating, cut back on the amount of bee pollen immediately. Contact a doctor if the symptoms persist.
