How to Use BT-7 Brain Tuner Frequencies

The BT-7 Brain Tuner is battery-powered electronic frequency generator with wires that you connect behind your ears with electrodes to receive electrical stimulus during a 20-minute session that the inventor, Bob Beck, says can help you relax and grow calm, improve your ability to focus, and attain deeper, more restful sleep. There are six different settings to choose from, including frequencies that correspond to delta (deep REM sleep) and alpha (active, creative) brainwaves.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the lid off of the back of the Brain Tuner and connect a 9-volt battery to the terminals, then replace the lid. Turn the switch on the front of the unit clockwise to the "On" position. The display lights will flash once, indicating the unit is ready, and Mode 1's green light will glow. Turn the switch counterclockwise to turn it off.

    • 2

Clean behind your ears to remove skin oils. Place one cotton cover (included) over each headset electrode, and then moisten the cotton covers with water. Place the electrodes in the hollows behind your ears.

    • 3

Plug the electrodes wire into the jack on the Brain Tuner. Slide the clip on the back of the unit into the holding clip of the included arm clip and band. Slide the unit with the arm clip and band up your arm and then tighten the clip and band to keep it fastened. If you prefer, place the unit in your pocket instead of strapping it to your arm.

    • 4

Turn the switch clockwise to turn the unit on, and rotate the switch gradually to increase the intensity until you feel the current, a pleasant buzzing sensation.

    • 5

Press the "Mode" button to select any of six modes. Modes 1, 2 and 3 have a pulse length of 550 microseconds, and modes 4, 5 and 6 have a pulse length of 220 microseconds. Modes 1 and 4 are "Deep Relaxation," modes 2 and 5 are "Dynamic," and modes 3 and 6 are "Meditation." A green light appears next to each mode as you select it. The base frequency for all modes is 1,000 Hz, pulse-modulated by 111.111 Hz. Mode 3 and 6's amplitude is modulated by 7.83 Hz. After 20 minutes of use, the timer will automatically cycle the Brain Tuner into a power-saving "sleep mode." You can then turn it off or partake of another 20-minute session.
