Neti Pot Complications

The neti pot is a device that looks similar to a teapot and is used for nasal cleansing and irrigation. The pot is filled with a warm saline solution that rinses the nasal cavity of germs that cause infections, blockage and common cold symptoms. Once filled with the solution, the spout of the neti pot is inserted into one nostril while the remaining nostril is left open to drain the fluid. Despite the effectiveness of this tool, there can be some complications.
  1. Discomfort

    • First-time users are especially susceptible to discomfort. However, this can happen to anybody. This discomfort often comes in the form of a stinging sensation within the nasal cavity. The cause of this is too much salt in the mix. Instructions should be carefully followed when mixing the saline solution. Each user is also very different in that more or less salt may be required to achieve maximum results. Another factor to watch for is capsaicin. This is mixed in some pre-made saline solutions. It comes from hot peppers and can cause a strong burning sensation.

Water Will Not Flow Through Nasal Cavity

    • Properly using the neti pot involves a lot of experimentation with the insertion angle and pressure. Misjudging these two factors can result in blocking the flow of water through the nose and nasal cavity. Too much pressure can block the saline solution from exiting the neti pot since the opening in the spout will be pressed against the inside of the nostril. Some spout openings are soft and will collapse under too much pressure. Mucus blockages within the nose can also prevent the flow of the saline solution.

    Sanitation

    • With each use of the neti pot, germs and bacteria are deposited on its surface. Moisture can also lead to mold and mildew. Improper or lack of cleaning the pot can result in illness and therefore defeat the purpose of using the pot. To clean the neti pot, rinse the interior and exterior with warm water and a mild soap. Towel dry the exterior and allow the interior to air dry.
