Chlorine Dioxide Scam

Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), an alternative medicine advertised as a panacea, is a solution of chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide is a poisonous substance, and the FDA considers the marketing of chlorine dioxide as a medicine to be fraud.
  1. MMS Claims

    • The creators of Miracle Mineral Solution claim that the solution, when taken daily as drops mixed in with an acidic beverage, can cure an enormous range of diseases. Diseases that the MMS website claims the supplement can effectively cure include cancer, AIDS, hepatitis A, B and C, herpes, tuberculosis and malaria.

    Chemical Composition

    • When mixed with an acidic beverage, the MMS supplement produces a chlorine dioxide mixture. Chlorine dioxide is is one molecule of chlorine and two molecules of oxygen. The substance has long been used as a disinfectant. In modern use, chlorine dioxide is an industrial strength bleach, used to strip textiles and bleach paper. Kitchen and bathroom cleaners contain weaker forms of bleach.

    FDA Warning

    • In January 2009, the FDA warned the makers of MMS and other producers of chemically equivalent products that the medical claims made in the marketing of their products violated U.S. law. In a July 2010 press release, the FDA warned the public that MMS is not FDA approved for human ingestion and that ingesting it or any other chlorine dioxide supplement can lead to serious illness.
