The Features of the Human Face

The features on a human face are supported by several bones and muscles and serve various purposes such as seeing, smelling, tasting and hearing. Each face is unique, but several features are universal.
  1. Eyes

    • Eyes can be very expressive.

The eye is an organ that functions like a camera and has been called the most complex part of the human body. Light enters the eye through the cornea and is regulated by the pupil, which opens and closes. Other parts of the eye create tears, control eye movement and send sight information to the brain.

    Eyebrows

    • Eyebrows protect the eyes from dripping sweat.

The eyebrows prevent sweat from entering the eye and are an important indicator of mood. Raised eyebrows can indicate surprise or fear; lowered eyebrows weariness or suspicion.

    Nose

    • The human nose both serves as the olfactory organ and is the opening to the respiratory sytem.

The nose not only contains the olfactory organ, which gives us the sense of smell, but is also the opening to the respiratory tract. The nose warms, moistens and cleans the air that enters it.

    Ears

    • The ear helps our bodies to stay balanced.

The ears not only function as auditory organs, but establish balance throughout the body. The ear is divided into the external ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The inner ear contains the cochlea and the semicircular canals that maintain balance.

    Lips

    • The lips are very effective in portraying emotion.

The lips are another very expressive organ. Their purpose is to assist in eating and drinking, especially during infancy.
