Blue Green Algae Safety
Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria known as cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are aquatic and live primarily in water resources. Blue-green algae is harvested and used as a supplement in capsules and other supplement forms such as spirulina.-
Contamination
-
According to the Wellness Guide to Dietary Supplements, blue-green algae that is harvested from natural lakes may contain microcystins. Microcystins produce toxins that can damage your liver.
Other Effects
-
Some blue-green algae supplements can be contaminated with toxic metals, such as mercury. Contaminated supplements can cause stomach irritation, nausea, vomiting, a rapid heartbeat, and other medical conditions.
Considerations
-
Avoid swimming in lakes containing blue-green algae. It isn't recommended that you take blue-green algae supplements if you're pregnant, and don't give these forms of supplements to children. Swimming in natural bodies of waters (such as lakes) should be avoided, as skin irritations, conjunctivitis, nausea, and stomach irritation may occur.
