What Are the Dangers of Alkaline Water Storage Problem?
Alkaline water contains higher mineral and antioxidant concentrations than tap water, and helps to improve hydration, calcium deficiencies, and reduce acidosis. It is possible to get the daily benefits of alkaline water by using a water ionizer hooked directly to your household faucet. However, consumption of the alkaline water should occur shortly after production. Storage of the ionized water can destroy its beneficial properties.-
Quality Container
-
While storing alkaline water for 18 to 24 hours has not shown any significant detriment to alkaline properties, a quality container isl necessary. If alkaline water must be stored, store it in a sealed glass jar, Nalgene bottle or other nonreactive material. Cheaply produced plastics, such as bottles used for store-bought water, can leech chemicals into the water that effect health and taste. Also, use an opaque container to avoid any effects from light exposure.
Loss of pH
-
One of the benefits of alkaline water is to help reduce the natural acidity of the body. High acidity, referred to as acidosis, can cause kidney problems and cell damage. Ideal alkaline water has a pH of eight to ten depending on an individual's tolerance. Storage of alkaline water allows continued contact with air. The exchange of carbon ions between air and water will slowly reduce the pH of the water back to neutral (pH 7) or equivalent to tap water. This nullifies the water's ability to affect the acidity of the body.
Precipitate
-
Water ionizers use electrolysis to concentrate positively charged ions such as calcium, magnesium and potassium. While the water is at an alkaline pH the minerals remain dissolved in solution. However, as the pH of the water falls during storage, the high concentration of minerals will begin to precipitate out. Long term use of the same container may also lead to the build up of minerals on the inner surface. To help prevent this, use a wide mouthed container and thoroughly wipe of the inside. If mineral build up is allowed to continue, soap will stick to the minerals and cause a soapy taste the next time the container is used.
