What Is Spirit of Turpentine Used for?

Turpentine is a compound distilled from the wax expelled by coniferous--especially pine--trees. Throughout its history, the medicinal uses of spirits of turpentine have remained questionable and are even considered toxic by some.

Paint Solvent

• The most commonly accepted use of turpentine is as a natural paint solvent. Pour some of the oil on areas affected by oil-based paint and rub gently to remove the paint. It washes off easily with water.

Alternative Medicine

• Henriette's Herbal Homepage lists some of the uses of turpentine, including as a remedy for "sluggish conditions of the uterus, vagina and kidneys," laxative, cure for pin worms and circulatory stimulant.

Chemistry

• Turpentine can be a starting ingredient in the formation of many other compounds, like camphor and menthol, according to the United Nations' Forestry Department. It is part of many cleaning supplies and disinfectants.
