What Are the Dangers of Epson Salt?
Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, is a compound composed of three elements: oxygen, sulfur and magnesium. Epsom salt is used as the primary component in bath salts, which are used to scent and soften water used for bathing, and is also used by farmers to enrich magnesium-depleted soil. Although Epsom salt has many practical applications, it can be dangerous if misused.-
Gastrointestinal Upset
-
Ingesting too much Epsom salt may cause gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and cramping. These symptoms may indicate toxicity.
Magnesium Toxicity
-
The primary ingredient in Epsom salt is magnesium. If too much Epsom salt is ingested or used as an enema, magnesium toxicity will occur. Magnesium toxicity can be fatal. Symptoms of magnesium toxicity include low blood pressure, chronic diarrhea, heart arrhythmia, exhaustion, lethargy, appetite loss and trouble breathing.
Death
-
If magnesium sulfate builds up in the system to the point of magnesium toxicity, death can occur.
