Types of Deep Tissue Massage
-
Neuromuscular Therapy
-
Neuromuscular deep massage utilizes specialized massage strokes to separate muscle tissue in order to identify and diagnose areas of built-up scar tissue or lactic acid. According to licensed massage therapist Crystal Scott, neuromuscular massage therapy is an intense form of massage with a concentration on one specific area of the body. "Deep tissue therapy is the perfect therapy for athletes, anyone who is physically active or anyone who does a repetitive activity," she says. "It can be helpful for a young athlete, or even an old lady who does knitting and is putting her muscles through the same motion."
Trigger Point Therapy
-
When adhesions are detected deep within muscles, trigger point therapy is used to alleviate tension and promote better circulation. Trigger point massage involves applying medium to strong pressure to one area for as long as 30 seconds. The continual pressure dispenses the congestion, scar tissue or lactic acid throughout the body. Trigger points can present themselves as dull or sharp pain, pins and needles, tingling or even nausea, earache or blurred vision. When found in muscle fibers, connective tissue and deep ligaments, these trigger points can spread to other areas of the body and cause headaches or hip tightness. "Trigger point therapy can be used on its own or in combination with neuromuscular therapy," Scott says. "It's probably one of the most effective therapies out there that most people don't know about. Someone gets a headache and immediately takes a pill to help, not thinking that it could be a deeper, muscular cause." Increased blood and lymphatic flow also help the body heal faster and avoid a buildup of scar tissue or lactic acid within muscles.
Rolfing
-
According to the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration, rolfing is a system of palpation, discrimination and integration of the body, its tissues and muscles. Created by Dr. Ida P. Rolf more than 50 years ago, rolfing reorganizes connective tissues. It is similar to deep tissue massage in that it promotes better posture, alleviates pain, releases tension, increases energy and helps prevent injury. Like neuromuscular or trigger point therapy, rolfing is beneficial for athletes, dancers and those who experience muscle aches in one or more specific areas.
