Natural Cures for a Toenail Infection

Yeast, molds and fungus are typically the culprits when it comes to toenail infections. Doctors treat these infections with prescription anti-fungal drugs. But prescription medications can be expensive and adversely affect the liver. Over-the-counter medications are not usually strong enough to kill the fungus. No studies have been done to determine the effectiveness of home remedies in curing toenail infections, but the Mayo Clinic recognizes several popular remedies you might want to try.
  1. Vinegar

    • Soak your foot in a mixture of one part vinegar to two parts warm water for 15 to 20 minutes. Vinegar inhibits the growth of bacteria and may do the same for the fungus that causes most toenail infections. You can soak as often as once a day, though you may find the vinegar to be very drying to your feet.

    Vick's Vapor Rub

    • No scientific studies or clinical trials have tested the effectiveness of Vick's on toenail fungus, but many people report it works for them. The Mayo Clinic recommends asking your doctor about the proper application of Vick's for your toenail fungus.

    Tea Tree Oil

    • Tea Tree, or Melaleuca oil, shows the most promise for treating toenail infections. A study reported in the April 2002 issue of The Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy found that tea tree oil killed several types of fungus known to cause infection. Sufferers have reported success in applying tea tree oil to the nail and surrounding tissue daily. Tea tree oil should never be taken internally. Discontinue use if you experience skin irritation.
