Can You Really Hypnotize Someone?

Hypnosis is a very real trance-like mental state in which the subject may experience a heightened sense of mental focus that can be helpful in encouraging him to change unwanted thought patterns or behaviors through positive suggestions. Hypnosis may also be beneficial in reducing pain.
  1. Imagery Induction

    • A hypnotherapist may induce a deep trance in a subject by asking him to focus his attention on an imaginary scene while speaking in a relaxing tone of voice.

    Eye Fixation

    • A less frequently used method of inducing a hypnotic trance includes eye fixation techniques whereby the subject concentrates on a single moving object or a flame while the hypnotherapist's voice lulls him into a trance state.

    Mind Control

    • A subject in a hypnotic trance will not do anything that is against his or her will despite common myths to the contrary.

    Self Hypnosis

    • Commonly used to reduce unwanted habits or behaviors, the subject relaxes herself by using deep breathing, soothing suggestions or a self-help hypnotic tape. When relaxed, she will recite positive affirmations about areas of her life she wants to improve.

    Sessions

    • A typical hypnotherapy session may last up to an hour and the subject will probably remember the session. After a hypnotic session, the subject may immediately resume his normal activities.
