Intense Pulse Light Therapy
Also known as Flashlamp therapy, IPL or Intense Pulsed Light therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses the emission of a broad light spectrum through intense pulses to improve the appearance of skin. Applying different IPL machine settings, the procedure can treat skin problems including vascular lesions, spider veins, freckles, mild acne, age marks, stretch marks, wrinkles, and unwanted hair.-
The Therapy
-
IPL machines work like lasers. They absorb light energy into a targeted area of the skin. The light energy that is absorbed gets converted into heat which then affects the target area. Unlike lasers, however, IPL uses several color wavelengths in each pulse emitted, rather than just one wavelength.
IPL treatment is a non-ablative procedure. It is a resurfacing method that only involves the dermis, or the lower skin layers without harming the epidermis, or the upper skin layers.
Before the procedure, the doctor gives a step-by-step approach to the therapy. The entire process is explained, and this is a good time for you to address your concerns and to clearly state all your expectations.
During the procedure, topical anesthetic (which is not always necessary) is applied to the targeted area. The IPL machine head's glass tip contacts the skin and emits light pulses. Cooling gel is placed on the skin area being pulsed. IPL machines usually have built-in cooling devices. The entire procedure typically lasts about 20 minutes. For best results, additional sessions, usually four to six more, may be done once every three to six weeks.
Recovery
-
The major advantage of IPL procedures is its minimal downtime. You can go through the therapy during your lunch break and return to work after the procedure. You must avoid sun exposure prior to and after the treatment. You will notice the improvement in your skin after two therapy sessions, depending on your skin condition and the severity of the problem.
Side Effects
-
Like any cosmetic procedure, complications and side effects may arise. For IPL procedures, however, side effects are minor. These are potential complications: (1) discomfort and pain during the IPL procedure (can be treated by applying cold compress or an anesthetic); (2) skin becoming pinkish-red with a stinging sensation after the therapy (the feeling resembles getting a sunburn and can lead to swelling, redness, and peeling after a few days); (3) skin blisters due to skin pigments absorbing excessive amounts of light energy; (4) damage to skin pigment resulting in darkening in some skin areas; or (5) hair loss.
