How Do Cranberry Pills Help Interstitial Cystitis?
Interstitial cystitis (I.C.) is a medical condition that causes pain and discomfort in the bladder and surrounding pelvic area. Unlike bladder infections, bacteria are not the cause of this condition.-
Symptoms
-
The symptoms of interstitial cystitis are very similar to those of bacterial bladder infections. In both cases, individuals experience a frequent urge to urinate and burning upon urination. A urine test is necessary to rule out a bacterial bladder infection.
Cranberry
-
Cranberry juice and cranberry pills have been shown to be helpful in the treatment of bacterial urinary tract symptoms in some individuals. Cranberry products do not help in the treatment of interstitial cystitis.
Method
-
Cranberry products help reduce the adhesiveness of bacteria cells. This makes it difficult for bacteria to adhere to the bladder lining. Although bacteria may still be present in the urine, they are more likely to be flushed out of the bladder.
Considerations
-
Cranberry products are not recommended for treatment of interstitial cystitis patients due to the high concentration of vitamin C, which has been shown to increase symptoms and cause further irritation in some individuals.
Diet
-
A proper diet can be helpful to individuals who have been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. Foods to avoid are those that contain high levels of vitamin C, caffeine, chocolate and carbonated beverages.
