Castor Oil Packs & Gallstone Pain
Castor oil packs are a natural, holistic way to treat disorders associated with the gastrointestinal system, including gallstones. This inexpensive home remedy gained popularity in the U.S. when Edgar Cayce recommended it for treating a number of conditions.-
Procedure
-
A castor oil pack for gallstone pain can be made by applying a thin layer of castor oil to the skin and covering the area with plastic. A towel is then placed over the plastic and a source of heat such as a hot water bottle or heating pad is placed on top of the towel. An additional towel or blanket is added as the final layer of the pack to insulate the heat source.
Placement
-
Castor oil packs that are being used to treat gallstone pain should be placed over the upper abdomen for up to an hour.
Benefits
-
The ricinoleic acid that is present in castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritated tissues and organs. Castor oil packs also increase blood circulation.
Side Effects
-
People using castor oil packs might notice a slight tingling or burning sensation during the first few minutes the oil is applied to the skin.
Warning
-
Castor oil packs should not be placed on areas where the skin is broken by a cut, scrape or other injury.
