Home Remedy for Cirrhosis of the Liver

Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver caused by liver damage. It can be mild or chronic, depending on the degree of damage. As scarring builds up, liver function is decreased. Because the liver is essential to ridding the body of toxins and purifying the blood, a damaged liver is a serious matter. Health problems such as cancer, high levels of blood toxins and increased infections can result from cirrhosis.
  1. Traditional Medical Treatments

    • Traditional medical treatments for cirrhosis of the liver are twofold: The first is treating the underlying condition causing the liver scarring; the second is treating complications arising from the scarring itself. Because alcoholism and hepatitis often cause cirrhosis, those conditions are addressed first. Secondary conditions are then treated. Those conditions include excess fluid in the body, reduced liver albumin synthesis, infections, liver cancer, high levels of toxins in the blood and increased pressure in the veins around the liver.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatments

    • Traditional Chinese medicine addresses overall health, with a focus on eating a healthy diet and leading a healthy lifestyle. Qigong exercises are recommended to improve health and involve regulating mind, body and respiration. Exercises are done alone or with the assistance of a quigong master. The needs and symptoms of the patient determine the type and extent of exercise.
In addition to quigong exercise, acupuncture is used to pinpoint specific problems. The size of the needles, the depth of the insertion, the length of time elapsed and the choice of points along meridians are all based on the effects being sought. Medicinal herbs are also prescribed to keep the patient in the best physical condition possible and to attempt to reverse the liver damage.
Controlling liver inflammation is a priority in Chinese medicine. Anti-inflammation herbs are used to protect liver cells. In addition to controlling inflammation, Chinese herbs are used to improve liver albumin synthesis and reduce blood in the stool.

    Diet Supplements

    • A juice made from spinach and carrots works well to treat cirrhosis and is a common treatment. To make, juice the carrots and spinach separately. Then mix 200 ml of spinach juice with 300 ml of carrot juice.
Eclipta alba is an effective herb for cirrhosis. Patients should take a drop of the extract and combine it with one tsp. of honey. The mixture should be taken three times a day for at least 25 days.
A juice made from 50 grams of white radish leaves and stems can be taken on an empty stomach every day for treatment of cirrhosis.

    Exercise and Rest

    • Yoga can be an effective treatment for cirrhosis, and certified yoga instructors can often recommend poses that are helpful in recovering from liver damage.
Avoiding heavy exercise, resting after hard work and getting adequate sleep are important in the treatment of cirrhosis, as well.
