Side Effects of Aloe Ingestion

Aloe vera is a popular medicinal plant, commonly used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes and epilepsy. There are few risks associated with orally ingested aloe vera.
  1. Cramping

    • Natural aloe vera contains a latex-like compound called aloin, which irritates the digestive system. This can lead to abdominal cramping.

    Diarrhea

    • Aloe vera is commonly used as a laxative because it irritates the colon and lubricates bowel movements. This can lead to loose stools.

    Drug Interactions

    • Because aloe vera can cause diarrhea, it can impair the body's ability to absorb medication through the digestive system.

    Glucose Levels

    • Aloe vera can decrease blood-glucose levels. This side effect can be harmful for people taking glucose-lowering drugs.

    Pregnancy

    • In very large amounts, aloe may cause contractions of the uterus; this could lead to preterm labor or miscarriage.
