Psyllium Dangers
-
Psyllium and Choking
-
Psyllium seeds swell when added to water--the reason why it is helpful in cleaning the colon. However, if not mixed properly or with enough water, psyllium can swell in the throat, causing choking.
Medication Interactions
-
If taking other medications, patients taking psyllium should be cautious. Psyllium use can decrease the effectiveness of other medications. Medications are best absorbed when taken 2 hours before or after psyllium ingestion.
Vitamin Malabsorption
-
Iron and vitamin malabsorption is a possible side effect of prolonged psyllium use. Psyllium cleans the colon, but along with that, it prevents the body from properly absorbing vitamins.
Opposite Effects
-
Psyllium husks can have the opposite effect on the body. Swelling from psyllium can cause further obstruction in the bowels when used to treat constipation.
Psyllium and Diabetes
-
Those with diabetes should take psyllium with caution or avoid it altogether. Psyllium can have an adverse effect on blood sugar.
