Psyllium Dangers

Psyllium is a natural seed used to clean the colon. It is ground down into powder form to be mixed into beverages or capsules for consumption. Although an effective colon cleanser and widely used, there are side effects and dangers if not used correctly.
  1. Psyllium and Choking

    • Psyllium seeds swell when added to water--the reason why it is helpful in cleaning the colon. However, if not mixed properly or with enough water, psyllium can swell in the throat, causing choking.

    Medication Interactions

    • If taking other medications, patients taking psyllium should be cautious. Psyllium use can decrease the effectiveness of other medications. Medications are best absorbed when taken 2 hours before or after psyllium ingestion.

    Vitamin Malabsorption

    • Iron and vitamin malabsorption is a possible side effect of prolonged psyllium use. Psyllium cleans the colon, but along with that, it prevents the body from properly absorbing vitamins.

    Opposite Effects

    • Psyllium husks can have the opposite effect on the body. Swelling from psyllium can cause further obstruction in the bowels when used to treat constipation.

    Psyllium and Diabetes

    • Those with diabetes should take psyllium with caution or avoid it altogether. Psyllium can have an adverse effect on blood sugar.
