Tea Tree Oil for Tailbone Pain

The coccyx is the very bottom of the spine and is also known as the tailbone. Coccyx pain, or coccydynia, is usually caused by a fall or childbirth.
  1. Features

    • The coccyx may be made up of five separate bones, though most people have two or three. About five percent of adults have the bones in the coccyx completely fused.

    Features

    • Coccyx pain can be very uncomfortable. It is usually felt at the base of the coccyx and can be felt above the anus and between the buttocks. Sitting and leaning back puts more pressure on the tailbone and can make the pain worse.

    Considerations

    • If you have a skin rash or irritation, you may experience pain or irritation at that location, particularly when sitting. This may be mistaken for tailbone pain.

    Effects

    • Tea tree oil has potent antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal properties. If you apply two to three drops to the skin, it will clear any irritation within five to seven days. If you have sensitive skin you should first mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil such as almond or walnut.

    Misconceptions

    • Although tea tree oil has antiseptic properties and may relieve tailbone soreness if it is caused by a rash or skin irritation at the site of the coccyx, there is no evidence to suggest that it can alleviate pain from trauma to the tailbone from falling or childbirth.
