Neti Pot Salt Instructions
Using a neti pot can bring relief to those who suffer from allergies or stuffed-up sinuses, which can cause painful headaches. The little pot, usually ceramic, can be found at drugstores and health food stores and looks something like a miniature teapot with an extra-long spout. This pot is used to pour a warm saline solution through your nostrils, clearing them and providing relief from sinus pressure.-
Salt
-
Mix 1/8 tsp. of non-iodized finely ground salt with 8 ozs. of warm water. Some neti pots are sold with their own packages of salt and instructions for making the mixture. Follow the instructions that come with your neti pot. You will need to make this mixture twice, once for each nostril.
Using the Neti Pot
-
Pour the saline solution into your neti pot. Lean your head forward and to the side over a sink or empty tub. Tilt your head so that one nostril is directly on top of the other. Place the spout of the neti pot at the opening of the nostril that is on top. Tip the neti pot until the water begins to flow into one nostril and out the other. Continue to pour the solution through your nose until the pot is empty. Breathe through your mouth, not through your nose, while pouring the solution. Remove the pot from your nostril, plug that nostril and gently blow your nose to clear it of any remaining water.
Wipe your nose and repeat the process, this time tipping your head to the other side and pouring the saline solution into the other nostril.
Helpful Tips
-
Protect nostrils that may be cracked or peeling from excessive nose blowing with some petroleum jelly before using the neti pot. The saline solution in the pot may burn the irritated outer surface of your nostril if you don't protect it first.
Use your neti pot daily to keep your nasal passages clear.
