Massage Therapy Draping Instructions

In every state that regulates massage, the regulations are strict about covering the genitalia of the client. For therapists, this skill is called draping. Several techniques can be used to ensure your client is draped properly while still allowing you free access to all the body parts to be massaged.
  1. Sheets

    • In many videos and books, towels are used instead of sheets as a means of covering the private areas of a client. This is not realistic for most all massage therapists and massage settings outside of posh or exotic massage or spa settings.
The majority of massage therapists use a set of twin sheets, one fitted and one flat, to cover the table and the client. The material each therapist selects for the sheets varies, but keep she keeps the comfort, number of natural fibers and warmth in mind. Prepare your table similar to a bed, where the client rests between the fitted and flat sheet. The client should begin the session with only the head exposed.

    Draping Techniques

    • When draping the client, all of the body should be covered except the portion being massaged. For example, if the arm is being massaged, only the arm should be exposed. This is for client comfort and privacy. The massage therapist should be able to have unencumbered access to the body part being massaged without exposing too much of the client's body. Special care should be taken around private areas such as the breasts, groin or buttocks to ensure the client remains relaxed, safe and secure during a massage.

    Draping Around the Groin

    • When draping around the groin, special care must be taken to ensure the client's privacy and that his comfort is not compromised. The diaper drape is a way to drape around the groin to ensure privacy is protected while giving the therapist full access.

First, roll the sheet back exposing one leg. Raise the leg slightly, just enough to pass the rolled sheet under. Pull the sheet upward so that it forms a firm border between the exposed leg and the covered groin or buttocks. When both legs are draped in this manner, the drape should look as though the client is wearing a large diaper, with the sheet passing between the exposed legs while maintaining cover on the groin area.

    Draping The Breasts

    • Draping the breasts can be easily accomplished using a pillowcase or hand towel. With the sheet covering the breasts, lay the pillowcase or towel across the breasts. With one hand holding the towel in place, or with the help of the client, slide the sheet out from under the towel. Massage as normal, ensuring the breasts remain covered. When you are done, cover the towel with the sheet and pull the towel out.
