How Long Should You Take Silver Colloidal?

Colloidal silver is produced in liquid suspension form, and is administered both internally and externally as an alternative medicine to traditional antibiotics. As a non-prescription medication the dosage and length of treatment recommended for use of colloidal silver vary on a case-by-case basis, due to the risk of silver toxicity.
  1. Description

    • Colloidal silver is a liquid suspension containing microscopic silver particles. A colloid technically contains particles that are not dissolved down into an ionic solution, and commercially marketed colloidal silver includes several concentrations of ionic silver or silver compounds, silver colloids, or silver proteins in purified water to create the suspension. The silver particles are usually dissolved in ratios between 5 and 50 parts per million, and there is currently no set federal regulation on the density of over the counter silver colloidal.

The silver in the colloidal acts as a catalyst to disable the growth and reproduction of microorganisms including bacteria and viruses. Although there has been no published human evidence to support the health effectiveness of colloidal silver, many scientists have used laboratory tests to prove its ability to disable these microorganisms.

    History

    • Colloidal silver is chosen as a substitute to antitbiotics for treatment of infectious diseases, or it can be applied topically to treat skin ailments like acne and warts. Unlike antibiotics, the body does does not develop a tolerance to colloidal silver and the beneficial effects of silver can continue without wearing down the immune system.

Colloidal silver has been marketed as recently as the late 1990's for use in treatment of chronic illnesses as serious as AIDS and cancer, though these claims had no proven evidence in human studies. Colloidal silver is available as an over-the-counter supplement, and is not regulated by FDA standards. Due to the lack of human testing, colloidal silver has not received federal approval for medical use.

Colloidal silver makes its way in the homeopathic market, an alternative to antibiotics in treating and preventing both viral and bacterial infections. However, there is a certain risk of silver toxicity that comes from saturation of levels of silver in the body, requiring moderation in the amount of colloidal silver being taken in.

    Dosage Instructions

    • Colloidal silver is admitted orally, internally and externally, and is supplied for both preventative and therapeutic methods. Recommended doses and measuring ratios vary by the ailment and administration method. Individual doses taken orally should be held under the tongue between 30 seconds and 3 minutes before swallowing to allow the silver to absorb prior to digestion.

Silver colloidal can be applied externally with the use of a bandage, kept moist with the silver suspension, left applied to the affected area until symptoms subside. Anecdotal evidence shows external colloidal remedies to provide remedies with less irritation than other medical creams and gels.

There does not appear to be a set answer to how long colloidal silver should be taken. The amount and length of time in the use of colloidal silver is non-prescriptive and is decided on a case-by-case basis. Each person should determine their own saturation level based upon the appearance of side effects, and immediately reduce the levels of intake in order to moderate the levels of silver maintained in the body.
