Types of Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is one of the fastest-growing alternative health techniques in the United States, and is no longer relegated just to the spa. Whether you are seeking ways to ease pain, alleviate stress or just relax, consider investigating this age-old practice. There are various forms of massage modalities and practitioners, so find the one that is best for you.
  1. Swedish Massage

    • There are more than 100 different types of massage techniques available. For instance, Swedish massage is the one most people are familiar with, in which oils and lotions are used to do mostly effleurage and petrasage strokes. "Effleurage" is the gliding motion of the hands up and down the body, while "petrasage" is the "milking" action of grabbing the muscles and kneading them.

    Neuromuscular Therapy

    • Neuromuscular therapy, or NMT, is known for its deep pressure and its ability to release endorphins---the same brain chemicals released in exercise that are natural opiates that boost mood. In NMT, the massage therapist uses static pressure on specific myofascial---or "trigger"---points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the body's soft tissues---the muscles, tendons and connective tissue---to help steady and rejuvenate your central nervous system.

    Craniosacral Therapy

    • Craniosacral therapy (CST) is almost the complete opposite. CST is a very gentle touch that releases restriction through subtle movements; some people even fall asleep during the session. The massage therapist acts almost as a mirror, and "listens" through his hands to the subtle messages sent by the body. He is able to identify areas of congestion, lethargy and tension, and to use gentle touch to help release those areas where anxieties, fears and other negative energies are held.

    Reflexology

    • Reflexology uses pressure points on the bottom of the feet---and, less frequently, the palms of the hand---to energize or heal points associated with the body's organs and systems. Far more than a simple foot message, this is an ancient, refined technique that helps release toxins during and after the treatment and identifies areas of both tension and sluggishness. Reflexology can be very beneficial if you suffer from headaches or other chronic conditions.

    Warnings

    • Always remember that certain massages are deeper then others, so consider your tolerance and also consider any ailments or mental-health considerations. Certain people should not receive specific types of massages due to pre-existing conditions, so consult your massage therapist beforehand and also make sure that you are dealing with a licensed professional.
