Astral projection is a separation of consciousness from our human bodies. This is also referred to as an out-of-body experience, where the soul is free to roam the universe during a state of low brain activity, during sleep or a trance-like state.
Types

Astral projection can be intentional or caused by a traumatic event befalling the physical body. Also, the International Academy of Consciousness asserts that we all experience some form of astral projection while we sleep.
Astral Body

According to astral projection experts, there are seven levels of existence and a body to represent each one. The astral body is the one that supports our auras and travels from our physical body, supported by a cosmic umbilical cord.

A theosophist named Madame Blavatsky reportedly spent several years training in astral projection with spiritual masters from India and Tibet. From her exocorporeal experiences come the ideas of seven different bodies and many other descriptions of the astral phenomenon.
