Proper Body Mechanics for a Massage Therapist

Massage therapists must always be mindful of their bodies while performing their massages to give the most out of their work and to avoid injury to themselves and their clients.
  1. Legs

    • Always bend at the knees when applying pressure. Try a lunging position whenever possible. Never curl your back or work with your spine out of alignment.

    Shoulders

    • Keep your shoulders back and relaxed; never hunched up by your ears. Imagine a string tied to the bottom of your shoulder blades pulling them to the floor.

    Elbows

    • Your body is there to help you; let its weight work with your elbow position. Keep your wrist and hand relaxed while working. Use the force for your entire body weight, not just from you upper body.

    Fingers

    • Never hyper-extend your fingers or thumb while performing any massage therapy strokes. Again, use proper posture and alignment to expel pressure and control your movements. Your fingers and thumb should be a continuation of your shoulder and body.

    Warning

    • Improper body mechanics can lead to serious injury over time. Watch you posture at all times. Listen to your body.
